- INSPIRE-Grid at INNOGRID2020+Monday, 05 June 2017
The project INSPIRE-Grid will be present at the next INNOGRID2020+ Conference to be held in Brussels on 26-27 June. It has been selected among the eight projects that will be presented during the conference in the two parallel sessions devoted to R&D projects. INSPIRE-Grid will be presented in the session ‘Prosumer empowerment & active system management’.
InnoGrid2020+ is THE EU event on innovation in electricity networks, co-organised by the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E) and the European Distribution System Operators for Smart Grids (EDSO). Completing the internal energy market and decarbonising the European economy by 2050 requires as of today structural investments in distribution and transmission networks research and development. Following the publication by the European Commission Clean Energy for all European Package in November 2016, the conference also aims to raise awareness of European and national policy-makers on what remains to be done to overcome existing challenges related to this process, as well as how legislation and regulation can support it. In the event a video of INSPIRE-Grid was presented.Watch the video at the following link:
- ENERGY FOR SOCIETYFriday, 31 March 2017
The 1st International Conference on Energy Research & Social Science, aims to examine the relationship between energy systems and society. It will cover a range of topics revolving around the intersection of energy technologies, fuels, and resources; and social processes and influences – including communities of energy users, people affected by energy production, social institutions, customs, traditions, behaviours, and policies.
INSPIRE-Grid project will be present with four posters:- P026 – Understanding the role of trust in power line development projects presented by PIK
- P043 – Managing the conflict with Multi-Criteria decision aiding in the electric transmission planning presented by Poliedra
- P050 – The INSPIRE-Grid project: stakeholders’ participation in the development of future grid infrastructures presented by RSE
If you are in the Conference, come to our stands and meet us! - INSPIRE-Grid: final conference in Brussels on 25th of January 2017Wednesday, 25 January 2017
Whether you call it Monsterpylons (UK), Monstertrasse (DE) or Monstermaster (NO) – the phenomenon is the same: very often and all over Europe, different stakeholder groups form and vocalise strong opposition to high-voltage power lines. Be it concerns over negative health impacts, possible consequences for the local economy or non-transparent decision-making procedures: there are many reasons why people question ongoing grid projects. However, industry and politics agree that the modernisation of the current grid infrastructure system is indispensible for the energy transition, system security and the integration of the European internal energy market.
So what can be done to incorporate these concerns and needs of stakeholders better into planning processes? How can different groups be better represented in decision-making procedures? And how can both project developers and researchers contribute to further improvement of existing tools?
These questions were discussed at the “Conference on Public Participation: State of the art approaches to stakeholder engagement in electricity infrastructure projects”, the Final Conference of the INSPIRE-Grid project. The Conference attracted more than 50 participants and several external guests were invited as speakers in order to share and discuss different experiences. Besides disseminating final results of the project to main target groups, in particular political decision-makers and practitioners, the Conference provided different experiences and views regarding possible approaches to stakeholder engagement.Presentations:
- Leonhard Spaeth, INSPIRE-Grid: main lessons learned
- Patrick Devine-Wright, Power lines and the Countryside: Is conflict inevitable?
- Ursula Hillbrand, Best practices in Stakeholder dialogue
- Giulia Molinengo, Designing participation: On the importance of roles, expertise and power issues – Project “Demoenergy”

At this year’s 6th European Grid Conference on 29 September in Brussels, the Renewables Grid Initiative will look at three different dimensions of the power grid: society, economy and the environment.
- How can grid investments have a social dimension?
- How can communities affected by new grid infrastructure benefiti economically?
- How can biodiversity and nature profit from new and existing power lines?
These and other questions will be addressed by distinguished speakers, including Maroš Šefčovič, Vice-President of the European Commission; Joseph P. Kennedy II, President and Founder of Citizens Energy Corporation; and Dominique Ristori Director General of DG Energy.

08_GeoRED - GRID AESTHETICS Workshop in MilanMonday, 27 April 2015
Design and technology can play a major role when seeking better solutions for the integration of grid infrastructure in the surrounding landscape. However, this requires big engineering efforts and often entails higher costs. Some TSOs, including Terna, have experimented with these new design options: how did they choose and implement the new pylons? How can stakeholders be engaged in such a decision-making process ?
The consortia of the two EU-funded projects INSPIRE-Grid and BESTGRID kindly invite you to the workshop and field trip:

How to engage stakeholders in landscape planning, design and aesthetics of grid infrastructure

- RGI’s 4th European Grid ConferenceWednesday, 14 January 2015
The Renewables-Grid-Initiative is holding its 4th European Grid Conference on 27th January 2015 in Brussels. This year, the event will focus on “Energy and Democracy”.
During the Conference, we will discuss how TSOs can master the challenges of the energy transition (Boris Schucht, CEO 50Hertz), the relationship between DSOs and TSOs in this new setting (Roberto Zangrandi, Special Advisor EDSO), and the role of disruptive storage options (Clemens Triebel, CTO Younicus). Further, we will elaborate on the questions what the Energy Union should deliver for the electricity sector (contributions from Pierre Schellekens, Deputy Head of Cabinet of Commissioner Arias Cañete and Jerzy Buzek, MEP and Chair of the ITRE Committee), which market reforms are necessary in this respect (Ben Vorhoorst, COO TenneT) and which role sustainability should play (Ariel Brunner, Head of EU Policy BirdLife Europe).
Further speakers include:
• Marie Donnelly, Director for New and Renewable Sources of Energy, DG Energy, European Commission
• Jo Leinen, MEP (Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats)
• Claude Turmes, MEP (Group of the Greens)
• Christoph Bals, Policy Director Germanwatch
• Monica Frassoni, President Energy Efficiency Alliance
• Graham Watson, President Climate Parliament
• Tor Eigil Hodne, Director EU-Office Statnett
• Ivana d’Alessandro, Secretary of the Bern Convention, Council of EuropeIn addition, the winners of the “Good Practice of the Year” will be announced in a dedicated award ceremony. Three outstanding practices in the categories environmental protection, stakeholder participation, and technology and design have been chosen by an independent jury of experts and will be rewarded at the event.
The 4th European Grid Conference is kindly sponsored by 50Hertz, TenneT and Eurobat.

Landscape mirrors the society that has determined and transformed it along the years and it contains the elements of our individual and social identity. The on-going implementation of the European Landscape Convention in the cross-border region between Italy and Switzerland will surely have a positive impact on the overall life quality of the inhabitants. One important aspect of life quality could be easily measured by the citizens participation on all relevant landscape issues. In this process citizens will also contribute to consolidate the European political and cultural identity. The up-coming EU Strategy for the Alpine Region will be a key process.
