The Renewables Grid gUG is managing and legally representing the Renewables-Grid-Initiative. It has been created with the specific purpose of running RGI in May 2012. It is financed by the RGI partners through their membership fee.
The Renewables-Grid-Initiative brings together non-governmental-organisations (NGOs) and electricity grid operators to support the effective integration of 100% renewable electricity into the grid. RGI was launched in July 2009 by a coalition of transmission system operators (TSOs) and NGOs and has grown to 13 members across Europe today, including TSOs from Belgium (Elia), UK (National Grid), France (RTE), Germany (50Hertz and TenneT), Netherlands (TenneT) as well as Switzerland (Swissgrid) and Norway (Statnett), and NGOs such as WWF International, Germanwatch, the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), Natuur&Milieu and BirdLife Europe. RGI advocates national and EU authorities to strive for an efficient, sustainable, clean and socially accepted development of the European network infrastructure for both decentralised and large-scale renewable energies. In November 2011, RGI brought together a coalition of 24 organisations, in signing the “European Grid Declaration on Electricity Network Development and Nature Conservation.
