National Grid is an international electricity and gas company and one of the largest investor-owned energy companies in the world. National Grid owns and maintains the high-voltage electricity transmission system in England and Wales, together with operating the system across the whole of Great Britain, balancing supply with demand on a minute by minute basis.
The electricity transmission system in England and Wales comprises approximately 7,200 kilometres of overhead line, about 690 kilometres of underground cable and 337 substations at 241 sites. National Grid is the Great Britain System Operator, responsible for managing the operations of both the England and Wales transmission , together with the two high voltage electricity transmission networks in Scotland.
National Grid also owns and operates the gas transmission network and four regional gas distribution networks in Great Britain. The company also operates in Northeast USA, operating over 14,000 km of electricity transmission and delivering electricity and natural gas to areas of Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont.
